If you like to create a statistic about frequencies of strings or numbers, you can use PowerQuery or pivot tables. For smaller and less complex statistics Sumproduct or even Countif might suffice.

I think that Sumproduct needs quite a long runtime and requires too much effort to maintain statistics on larger lists. PowerQuery and pivot tables are sometimes too complex for the casual user. And pivot tables do not automatically update with an Excel recalculation invoked by pressing F9.

So there is a gap between these approaches which I think you can close with VBA:
